Resource Efficiency Portal

Global demand for resources is increasing in parallel with the population and improving standards of living. In the last century the world’s population quadrupled while the economic output increased by 23 times. This resulted in:

  • 12 times more fossil fuel consumption,
  • 9 times more water usage and
  • 8 times more extraction of material resources.

It is expected that by 2050 the world’s population will reach 9 billion and consumption levels will increase accordingly with the developing countries and growing population. The current trends in growth don’t seem to be sustainable with the limited world resources.

Resource efficiency means making more productive use of scarce or potentially depletable natural resources such as raw materials, energy, and water and creating more value with fewer inputs. An important aspect of resource efficiency is that less waste is generated and more of what is generated is recovered for reuse. Through resource efficiency projects, it is possible to make existing production facilities capable of using less energy and other resources without reducing output thanks to the introduction of more advanced design features and new technologies.

Some production-process by-products previously treated as waste can be transformed into useful new resources through resource efficiency projects. Finally besides the positive environmental impact that resource efficiency in industry has, these projects also boost one’s global competitive strength.
