The 18th issue of Ecosystem Review by TSKB Economic Research has been published. The latest issue scrutinizes the concepts of social transformation and social capital from various perspectives including disaster resilience, human capital and gender equality. The issue also points out that societies with a strong social capital are better able to cope with challenges.

The 18th issue of Ecosystem Review, a periodical publication by TSKB Economic Research, delves into the concepts of social transformation and social capital from the perspective of social ties between individuals, post-disaster recovery, the impact of gender equality on social trust and the consequences of green transformation on employment. The issue emphasizes the importance of social capital, which increases the capacity of societies to operate on common values.

In the latest issue, Ecosystem Review offers a targeted review of social transformation led by ecosystem-friendly production techniques and technological transformation with a focus on human capital, underlining that such transformation will reshape the labor market. It is estimated that by 2030, a net of 78 million jobs (7% of current employment) will be created, with 170 million new jobs to be created and 92 million existing jobs to be displaced. Green transformation not only transforms certain sectors in line with the carbon neutral production approach to create new jobs but also changes the existing employment dynamics.

On a separate note, the issue also highlights significant changes in demographics, with the median age rising to 34.4 years in 2024 and the ratio of the population aged 65 and over increasing from 7.1% in 2007 to 10.6% in 2024. This increase is critical as older populations are more vulnerable to the ecosystem crisis.

This issue also touches upon ‘Glacier Protection, the theme of this year's World Water Day on March 22nd. It emphasizes that the extreme temperatures in the Arctic in February are remarkable and the risk of melting glaciers may exacerbate the risk of global warming.

Here are key highlights from the 18th issue of the Ecosystem Review:

  • Research shows that one of the main determinants for rapid recovery after disasters is the strength of social capital in addition to the magnitude of the disaster or the amount of aid provided.
  • Gender equality can have significant benefits for resilience by building social trust and strengthening social capital.
  • The International Court of Justice has heard the voices of the victims of the climate crisis. In the last month of 2024, the Court discussed countries' legal obligations on climate policies and is expected to issue an advisory opinion in 2025.
  • It is estimated that by 2030, a net of 78 million jobs will be created, with 170 million new jobs to be created and 92 million existing jobs to be displaced.
  • Carbon neutral production transforms certain sectors, leading to gaps in green jobs in certain areas.
  • In 2024, the median age rose to 34.4 years. Population aged 65 and over increased from 7.1% in 2007 to 10.6% in 2024. This change is critical as older populations are more vulnerable to the ecosystem crisis.
