TSKB Publishes ‘A New Chapter in Industrial Transformation: Environmental Goods’ Report
The report titled ‘A New Chapter in Industrial Transformation: Environmental Goods’ by TSKB Economic Research analyzes the strategic importance of environmental goods for the Turkish economy. The report states that environmental goods are key to both the global sustainability agenda and a qualitative shift in Türkiye’s production structure.
TSKB Economic Research has published its new report on environmental goods, which have become an increasingly strategic area in Türkiye's production and trade structure. The report A New Chapter in Industrial Transformation: Environmental Goods emphasizes that Türkiye's increasing production of environmental goods may shift its production pattern towards more knowledge-intensive and high value-added products.
The report analyzes Türkiye's position in environmental products through its export performance, its share in the European Union market, and its economic complexity indicators.
Highlights from the report are as follows:
- The latest update from the OECD notes that environmental goods cover 345 industrial products. Ranging from renewable energy equipment to waste and water management technologies, this product group not only provides the basic inputs for ecosystem-friendly transformation but also represents more knowledge-intensive production.
- Türkiye's exports of environmental goods reached US$31.5 billion in annualized terms as of the third quarter of 2025. Exports of environmental goods are growing faster than other product groups and the unit price increases for exports are also stronger.
- As of the third quarter of 2025, the share of environmental goods accounted for around 12% of Türkiye's total exports on an annualized basis. Moreover, the share of environmental goods in EU imports also demonstrates a noteworthy and accelerated increase, particularly after 2017.
- The analysis based on the Atlas of Economic Complexity methodology demonstrate that environmental goods are more complex and more knowledge-intensive than other goods. Even new environmental products for which Türkiye does not yet have a competitive advantage are more sophisticated than other new products.
- The skills required to produce environmental goods are considered to offer more opportunities for transition to new products than those required for other product groups. By producing more environmental goods, Türkiye can gain the skills needed to produce other products and shift its production pattern towards more knowledge-intensive products.
- Increasing competitiveness in environmental products can contribute to three main areas: growth in Türkiye's exports, the accumulation of skills for structural transformation, and the production of inputs required for an ecosystem-friendly global transformation.
